Abstract

The present study addresses the condition of indexing non-book written materials in 11 research institutes across Tehran. The research methodology is that of a survey, and the data are collected by means of questionnaires, observations and interviews. The findings show that to organize non-book written materials in these research institutes, five institutes use indexing, one uses cataloging and storing the document’s bibliographical information by computer, only one preserves full text of the document in PDF format, and another one uses the indexes in other databases. The other libraries have done nothing to organize their documents. The findings show, only 10 percent of the non-book written materials has been indexed, and the remaining 90 percent being left unattendes. Generally speaking, the present condition is not ideal and this is because of insufficient man powers, lack of specialized thesauri, lack of a policy compatible with the current needs which should also be capable of expanding with future needs, and officials’ inattention to indexing of non-book materials in their institutes.
