Abstract

0One of the most important tasks of librarians is information organizing and storing, in which they usually use of cataloging and classification methods. As these procedures are often time ¬consuming and expensive, due to their need to specialist
cataloger, librarians always have searched for easier and faster ways to minimize the effort needed in subject analysis. One of the substitute methods is catchword - indexing. In this method each significant word in a title becomes an entry, as subject descriptors.
Therefore the present research tries to answer the following question: Is there any significant correlation between assigned subject headings and derived terms from titles of Islamic literature? Results indicate that an average of 40% in the keywords of the records title completely matches to subject headings and by use of some other information sources it will raise to 74%. The highest degree of matching was found in books of Islamic history and geography while literatures on Muslim social life and customs had the lowest degree of matching.
