Faculty of Librarianship and Information science: Departments, fields, majors and proposed academic levels

Abstract

Objective: Establishing the Library and Information Science Faculty of Tehran University requires proper plan for departments, disciplines, specialties, and degrees. In this research we tried to find the appropriate educational model for the new Faculty according to best practices and expert's opinion.
Methodology: This research is an applied descriptive research utilizing both library based Study and Delphi Technique. The samples in library based Study were universities and colleges of five countries include: China, South Africa, US, UK, and Australia. Fifteen professors of Library and information science in Iran constitute the Delphi panel.
Findings: The results show that the appropriate title for the college can be: “Information science and technology”, and the disciplines may include : “Archive and records management”, “manuscript management”, “Library and information science”, “information systems”, “Knowledge management”, “Information history and philosophy”, “Information management” , “Information and library management”, “Scientometrics”, “Information and knowledge economy”, “Publishing”, “management information systems”, “Reference and information services”, “ information technology”.
We suggest four specializations for “library and information science" consist of:”Digital libraries”, "Academic libraries”, “public library”, and “special library”.
Also we suggest dual masters for library and information science with “children's literature”, “computer science”, and “Management”, and another for archive discipline with “history”, “literature”, “computer sciences”, and “management”.
