Link between Information Environment and Information Literacy: a case study of Graduate Students at Tabriz University

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to identify information environs of graduate students of Tabriz University and the relationship these may have with their information literacy skills. The research is a survey. The research population included all of the graduate students in Tabriz University.
Methodology: A sample of 278 students was formed using stratified random sampling technique and a print questionnaire was distributed.
Findings: The findings show that, the information environs of the students were computer site of university, library and dormitory. Also the most important reasons for students to use these information environs were the presence of experts, ease of communication with people, increased knowledge and personal experiences that result in information exchange in information environ, and the possibility to get help for resolving research issues and problems through information exchange. Regarding the status of students' five information literacy skills, the level of their skills was not satisfactory. According to research results it can be said that greater understanding of information environs and their agents, help better understand students' information seeking behavior and the flow of information to facilitate information exchange in students' information grounds.
