Purpose: This paper tried to identify and evaluate the most important strategies and actions of Iranian university libraries in the crisis of the COVID-19 epidemic in comparison with international examples.
Method: This was an applied research carried out with a descriptive-analytical survey method in two parts; Analyzing the situation of Iranian university libraries in the two dimensions of education and research in the face of the Covid-19 crisis, and examining the role of these libraries in the dimension of social responsibility in comparison with international examples. The tools of this research were a researcher-made checklist and a questionnaire, and the statistical population was Iranian and international academic libraries. Therefore, 301 international academic libraries and 33 in access and responded samples for the Iranian academic libraries and world academic libraries (based on the Times Higher Education world ranking) were chosen.
Findings: The state of university libraries in Iran in comparison with the most important university libraries in the world in this pandemic was such that the strategies and activities of these libraries in Iran did not have balanced and coordinated attention to education and research. Moreover, Iranian academic libraries’ strategies and activities were not synchronized with the international academic libraries’ strategies and activities.
Conclusion; Findings showed that the efforts of the academic libraries in the world in facing one of their most difficult challenges (COVID-19 crisis) were significant. Also, the share of commitment towards social responsibility in these libraries was significant, but the amount of attention paid to the activities of this aspect in Iran was low. Integration and connection between university libraries, educational and technological centers or units, and research and laboratory centers is the only solution during similar events.
