English

Objective: Entrepreneurship encompasses a broad range of competencies essential for identifying opportunities and successfully launching and managing businesses in competitive markets. Skills such as analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and interpersonal abilities are vital for entrepreneurs to create and capitalize on new opportunities under dynamic conditions. This study aims to examine the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills of graduate students in Knowledge and Information Science (KIS) in Iran.
Method: This descriptive survey study employed an online questionnaire as its primary data collection tool, distributed to postgraduate students enrolled in KIS programs across Iran. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling. The questionnaire, originally developed by Ugwu and Ezeani (2012), was validated through face validity assessment by subject matter experts. Its reliability was established via Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, which yielded a value of 0.84, indicating satisfactory internal consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages).
Results: The findings indicate that the personal entrepreneurial skills of KIS graduate students in Iran are at a favorable level, with students primarily introduced to entrepreneurship through personal interest. The level of knowledge regarding entrepreneurial characteristics was relatively favorable. Similarly, professional entrepreneurial skills, particularly those involving information and communication technology, were rated relatively favorably. The level of knowledge concerning entrepreneurial roles was also relatively favorable. Finally, the challenges and barriers to entrepreneurship and skill acquisition were perceived to be at a moderate level.
Conclusions: The results suggest that administering a formal assessment to evaluate KIS students’ capabilities and organizing specialized workshops to enhance their entrepreneurial skills would be appropriate. It is further recommended that universities support the professional endeavors of KIS graduates by providing financial facilities and loans, in cooperation with banking institutions, along with credit guarantees. Moreover, the university system and national governance bodies should encourage KIS entrepreneurs in job creation by granting them sufficient resources to achieve their objectives and offering legal, administrative, and organizational backing. Given the critical role of information technology skills, KIS specialists should be deployed in complementary and reinforcing IT capacities within organizations. Consequently, human resource planning and recruitment processes should explicitly account for these competencies.
