About the Journal
The journal of Academic Librarianship and Information Research is a peer-reviewed, open-access, quarterly journal published by the University of Tehran Press and the Central Library and Documentation Center. As a cross-disciplinary and refereed journal, it focuses on the research process in library and information science (LIS), as well as research findings and, where applicable, their practical applications and significance. The journal aims to publish high-quality research papers addressing the most recent issues and developments in the field.
Special Issue Overview
Academic Librarianship and Information Research invites scholars, practitioners, and researchers to submit original manuscripts for an upcoming special issue focused on AI Literacy and the Future of Academic Libraries: Redefining Roles, Services, and Research. This special issue seeks to explore the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on academic librarianship and information research. As generative AI (GenAI), machine learning, and large language models rapidly reshape information creation, discovery, and use, academic libraries stand at a critical juncture. We are particularly interested in papers that examine the research process in LIS within the context of AI, present empirical research findings on AI adoption and literacy, and highlight practical applications and the broader significance of these developments for redefining the role of academic libraries and their users. This issue aims to bridge theoretical frameworks with practical strategies for fostering AI literacy, developing new service models, and navigating the ethical and policy implications of AI in academic environments.
Suggested Topics
We welcome original research articles, review papers, short communications, and case studies. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- AI Literacy: Frameworks, pedagogy, and best practices for teaching AI literacy to students, faculty, and librarians in academic settings.
- Integration of GenAI in Library Services: Practical applications of AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, DeepSeek) in reference services, information retrieval, research support, and user education.
- Impact on Scholarly Communication and Information Research: AI tools for literature review, data analysis, research data management, and the evolution of academic publishing and peer review.
- Information Integrity and Misinformation: The role of academic libraries in detecting and combating AI-generated misinformation, deepfakes, and algorithmic bias.
- Ethical, Legal, and Policy Implications: Privacy, copyright, intellectual property, academic integrity, and the development of institutional AI policies and guidelines.
- AI in Collection Development and Resource Management: Using AI for collection analysis, weeding, selecting, and managing electronic resources and institutional repositories.
- Redefining Library Spaces and Roles: AI's impact on library infrastructure, professional identities, staff competencies, and the evolving job market for academic librarians.
- User Studies and Behavioral Research: Empirical studies on user perceptions, acceptance, and interaction with AI-powered library tools and services.
- Critical Librarianship and AI: Examining power structures, digital divide, and social justice issues related to AI implementation in academic libraries.
- Future Visions and Strategic Foresight: Speculative papers, scenario planning, and long-term strategic roadmaps for academic libraries in an AI-driven future.
