English

Objective: Information architecture (IA) plays a fundamental role in organizing, retrieving, and disseminating information through academic library websites. Despite the growing body of research, existing studies remain fragmented and lack a comprehensive conceptual framework. This study aims to identify the factors influencing IA in academic library websites and to develop an integrated conceptual framework through a qualitative meta-synthesis.
Method:This qualitative study employed the seven-stage meta-synthesis framework proposed by Sandelowski and Barroso. Relevant studies published between 2010 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science databases using systematic searching and backward snowball sampling. Following quality appraisal using the CASP checklist, 47 studies were synthesized through open, axial, and selective coding, thematic analysis, and Python-assisted data processing and network analysis.
Results:The meta-synthesis identified five interrelated dimensions of information architecture: User-Centeredness and User Experience, Technological Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence, Information Organization and Structuring, Contextual and Institutional Factors, and Sustainable Information Architecture. User-centeredness emerged as the dominant dimension, whereas contextual and sustainability-related factors were comparatively underrepresented. The relationships among these dimensions formed the basis of an integrated conceptual framework for academic library websites.
Conclusions:The findings demonstrate that information architecture should be viewed as a multidimensional socio-technical ecosystem rather than a purely technical framework. The proposed conceptual framework advances existing knowledge by integrating user-centered design, organizational structures, technological infrastructure, institutional governance, sustainability, and emerging interdisciplinary concepts into a unified model. This framework provides both a theoretical foundation for future research and practical guidance for designers, academic library managers, and policymakers.
